The absence of affront at the violation of the aesthetic distance may be employed as a diagnostic tool indicating that the nature of the entertainment is not, essentially, dramatic.

Consider the use of the on-screen telephone number. The display of an actual telephone number on screen as part of a dramatic entertainment has been ruled legally actionable, as it may constitute invasion of privacy. Film and television have adopted for display the telephone exchange 555, which is never actually assigned and thus cannot incite the litigious. The nonoffending number, as we know, appears on the screen in instances such as this:

BRENDA

Sergeant Mulchahy, we have that important telephone number.

SERGEANT MULCHAHY

Give it to me, Brenda….

(Brenda passes the sergeant a piece of paper on which we read “555-3948.”)
